John 5:19-20 ESV

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.  For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.

So this is fascinating to me. Jesus does only what he sees his father doing. So the only perfect man that ever walked on this planet, Jesus Christ does not attempt to blaze his own trail. He does not try to distinguish himself. But he instead is submissive and does ONLY what his Father does.

Unlike Jesus, you and I insist that we must set ourselves apart, distinguish ourselves, blaze our own trail. I believe that the drive behind that is sin. It leads to bending rules, twisting and shaping of truth, and disobedience. These are sinful. We are not the originator of such ideas. We are not clever or special or unique for doing them. These ideas come from the father of lies. There is nothing new about this.

If you would be perfect, submit to God’s authority, so what you see Jesus doing. Obey. In this wicked world, this if the surest way to stand out. Because everybody else is trying to blaze their own trail.
