Matthew 15:21-28 ESV
And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
As I began to think about these verses and their meanings, I had to clarify for myself some definitions to a couple of key words.
Namely:
Faith and authority
Of course these verses do not contain the word authority. But I think that the idea of it is important when considering what Jesus is saying to us here.
Faith can be defined as simply believing that Jesus is who He says He is and therefore believing that He will do what He says He will do. Moreover, Jesus is both capable (powerful) and desires (compassionate) to protect us and provide for all of our needs. That is what brings me to the definition of authority.
Authority means simply to be given charge over a person or persons. That is, the one in authority is to provide for and protect those that they have been given charge over. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Note: If this is the definition of authority, anyone who abuses the authority that they have been given for selfish gain or self amusement seriously violates the authority that they have been given. That person should not be trusted with authority. Authority is meant for the benefit of those underneath that authority, not for the benefit of the one who has been given the authority. The one whom has been given authority has been given a great responsibility.
I believe that faith in God and authority are so closely linked that they can hardly even be talked about apart from each other. To have faith in God is to believe that God is the ultimate provider and protector as HE promises that He is. Therefore our part in this relationship of faith is to submit to His authority and rest under His provision and His protection. It that light, let us consider the Canaanite woman from Matthew 15:
Jesus said that this woman has great faith. Why? What is the evidence of her great faith?
She came absolutely convinced that Jesus was the one person that has the power and the desire to care for her needs. She would not be deterred. I believe in fact that Jesus knew that this woman had remarkable faith. I believe that He declined her requests at first simply for the benefit of the disciples and indeed for us too. Jesus knows that faith in Himself is more powerful and desirable than any other thing. He wanted his disciples then and his disciples now to see this picture of faith. Consider what the woman was up against.
She was a woman approaching a group of men only to ask for something personal for herself. This was socially unacceptable many times over.
Jesus simply ignored her upon her first request.
Immediately His disciples literally begged Jesus to send her away.
She persisted.
Jesus then verbally rejected her in front of all of His disciples.
She persisted.
Jesus again rejected her in front of all of His disciples.
She still persisted.
The evidence of her faith is her persistence. She faced great opposition. Yet she would not be deterred nor would she be swayed. She knew from deep within that Jesus is the one. He is only one with the power and desire to care for her needs. Against all opposition she pressed in until she got what she needed.
Jesus is who He says that He is. As such, there is no one else. No other name other than the name of Jesus is worthy to be your provider and protector. No one else can care for needs like Jesus. No person under the provision and protection of Jesus has ever been found wanting. No one under His authority will ever be found wanting, not ever. He is who He says that He is. He is the only one in all of the universe that has the ability and desire (power and compassion) to care for you completely and eternally. It is right, it is fitting to submit to the authority of Jesus Christ. No one else is up for the task. No one else is worthy. Only Jesus.
Faith in Jesus is more powerful and desirable than any other thing.
