#responsibility Canonical Bible reading day 106 / 1 Kings 10-11

1 Kings 11:1-6 ESV

Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done.

The Bible is full of these warnings just the same as this warning given to the people of Israel. Remember that these are for our good and not for our harm. These writings are in the Bible for you and I to read them and for us to heed them. Our God who knows all things has given us this book so that we do not have to be an ignorant people. If we would take full advantage of the Word of God then we would cherish it and love it. We would read it, memorize it, share it, teach it, meditate on it. We would desire above all things to know the one who has written this blessed book for us. The truly wonderful thing is that this is the very reason that he gave us this book, so that we may know him and know him well.

You see God did not tell Israel not to enter into marriage with the women of foreign lands to be mean, or to cramp their style, or for any other reason but because he loves them and wants what is best for them. He knew before hand exactly what would happen if Israel would disobey this. So we see that King Solomon did disobey and the consequences were exactly as God said it would be. Solomon, his sons, and their sons from that day forth suffered for the decision of king Solomon to disobey God in this matter. All of this could have been avoided if the good king would have been intimately acquainted with God’s ordinances and been obedient.

Is it possible that you are ensuring consequences for your own disobedience? You can not claim ignorance in this matter because the Bible is always available and easily attainable. I would encourage you to grab a good copy of God’s Bible and become intimately familiar with it. This Bible is life, and breath, peace and joy for you. To ignore it is to bring calamity upon yourself in willful ignorance.
