#amazinggrace Canonical Bible reading day 97 / 2 Samuel 8-12

2SA 9:3-8 ESV

And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.” The king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.” Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.” And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?”

I love this kindness to Mephibosheth as a picture of our own salvation, our relationship with God.  This is an overwhelming kindness shown to a cripple, that is one who can not perform anything to deserve the kindness that has been shown him.  All Mephibosheth can do is be grateful.  This is how we have been invited to spend eteternity with the King of All Kings.  We do not deserve such an invitation to eat at His table.  We can do nothing to deserve it. Like Mephibosheth all we can do is be grateful and love and serve him.  But this will never make us worthy of such grace.  Even when we have served him perfectly for the next 6,000,000,000 years we will still be incredibly unworthy of the amazing grace that has been shown us.  Perhaps Mephibosheth has an advantage over us in that he is crippled in his legs. For he will less likely come to the foolish conclusion that he has earned his position or that he deserves it.
